The Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) emerged as the star performer among retail-heavy stocks, rallying a remarkable 115% this year. It was followed by Suzlon Energy, which gained 72%, and Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), up by 70%. Another strong performer was the Indian Railway Finance Corporation (IRFC), delivering a solid 64% return.
YES Bank, which boasts the highest number of retail investors at 61.56 lakh, saw its stock decline by 1.16% in 2024. Despite the significant retail interest, its performance failed to impress, leaving investors questioning its growth prospects.
Two prominent Tata Group stocks, Tata Steel and Tata Motors, underperformed compared to the BSE Sensex’s 11.76% gain this year. Tata Steel recorded an 8.13% rise, while Tata Motors managed a modest 0.7% uptick. Analysts cite factors like weak global steel prices and rising variable marketing expenses for the subdued performance of these giants.
Stocks such as RVNL, IRFC, NHPC, NTPC, IOC, and Tata Power have been categorized as "narrative stocks" by Kotak Institutional Equities. These stocks have seen a surge in retail investor ownership based on past high returns. However, experts caution that such concentrated retail participation poses risks of sharp corrections, especially if recent returns don’t meet expectations.
Among the other notable gainers, JIO Financial Services and Tata Power Company Ltd delivered returns of 30-45% in 2024. This steady growth has kept retail investors optimistic about these stocks.
While stocks like ITC, Reliance Industries, and HDFC Bank delivered flattish returns, others such as IDFC First Bank emerged as the worst performer, plunging 27% this year.
The year 2024 underscored the dynamic nature of retail-driven stocks. While some, like IREDA and Suzlon Energy, delivered exceptional gains, others highlighted the risks of heavy retail concentration and market volatility. Investors are advised to tread carefully, balancing their portfolios between high-growth opportunities and stable performers.
